It is true to say that most people consider their bathroom to be nothing more than a room full of tile along with shiny fixtures and fittings. Nonetheless, with a thorough reconsideration of how it could be, you could transform the space into something to be proud of. All that is required is a little  imagination on your part as to how you would like it to look together with the accessories for the bathroom needed to bring that dream bathroom to fruition.

You need to decide on a theme for your bathroom as you would any other room in the house. Theming not only adds mood to the room but also your individual personality. Naturally, there are literally hundreds of themes to choose from including sea life, country style, tropical beaches and Mediterranean villas. Even So, as a good rule of thumb, you should select a theme that suits you and not one that someone recommends. Ideally, go for a style that closely matches other deisgns around you house. By doing so, it will not be out of tune with the general theme of your home

Bathrooms in many older homes were installed as an afterthought and are literally converted closets in some cases. If you are unlucky enough to have a small bathroom, you can still decorate to give the illusion of space by utilizing the right colors. Just bear in mind that with a small bathroom, less is oftentimes more. Both paint and wallpaper work well although, in a small space, use neutral colors either on one wall or as an accent on a chair rail. If you decide on conventional white paint or paper, it is a simple matter of accenting with color using any of the countless decor accessories. Items like baskets, framed photographic prints, sea shells, throw rugs and even facades will all add colorful accents without going overboard.

If you prefer to put plants in your bathroom, then the ideal paper or paint color to set them off is a warm rust tone. You will however need to select your plants wisely because many will not tolerate the warm steamy atmosphere or the different chemicals contained in the likes of hairspray, deodorants and perfumes used in bathrooms. The residues from these products will eventually stick to the leaves and the plants will end up on the compost heap. Assuming that you have a big enough bathroom, you could hang plants from the ceiling. Alternatively, on the back of the toilet is another good position. If your tub is the type with a wide rim, try placing smaller plants around the outside and set them off with decorative baskets and soaps.

Another important aspect when decorating your bathroom are the towels and rugs. Deep opulent or hand woven rugs contribute a touch of elegance. Even So, take care when placing rugs on slippery ceramic tile bathroom flooring since a serious fall can be the result. Look for rugs that have a lined backing of rubber to prevent falls. You can coordinate the rugs with the bathroom mat in alternate or matching colors as well. Using different textures that match your theme will give the bathroom a little additional touch of warmth. Do not think you are limited on textures because when they are mixed with a neutral backdrop, they make a bathroom homely and inviting to be in.

Towel racks are another way to give a little pizzazz to your bathroom. Decorative racks with colorful towels make a bathroom stand out. You can find towel racks in different shades of wood, bronze, silver or gold. Some people paint their own wooden racks, and match their baskets and picture frames with them.

Good, practical contemporary bathroom lighting is important too. The initial consideration is for safety of course, but when the room is not being used, night lights can be left on and your cabinet tops could be utilized for a small lamp. Lamps can match your theme and so can your nightlights. You can decorate them, or buy them already arranged with your theme. Of course, this all depends if you have enough counter space, but it is a great decorating idea for a theme.

In conclusion, if you are lost for ideas, read through some home decorating books or magazines for inspiration to get your imaginative juices flowing. You might well discover some themes that you did not even know existed. It is your little corner of the world, so be as different as you want when decorating your home bathroom
