Many people do not think through the design principles behind which kind of bathroom tiles they want, resulting in a bathroom that is too stark and cold or too floral and soft.Considering colour and type of tile used can impact the overall design for good or ill.

If any room looks good with tiles, it’s the bathroom.Tiles add style and the perfect finishing touch to a bathroom.  The alternatives to tiles are water resistant wallpaper, which is still quite short lived in the sense that it does not last for a long time, meaning you have to wallpaper frequently. If your walls are smooth, you could try specialist bathroom paint. If not you will need to sand down and reapply fresh plaster.  But if your walls have minor imperfections, tiles can be placed over these, without too much preparatory work.

But when choosing tiles for your bathroom you need to choose specialist ceramic bathroom tiles. They are specially made to withstand the hot, humid, steamy conditions found in most bathrooms.

Cheap standard tiles can be tempting, but may need replacing quickly, so they won’t actually save you anything in the long run.

Don’t neglect colour.Minimalist bathrooms usually have very sleek surfaces and a lot of colour, so white tiles can seem very tempting. But these can look pretty harsh.  You would be better going for a white tile, with some that have a silver insert or black, even grey, just to break up the white and smooth out the sharpness of the block of white.

Some bathroom tile designs can be fairly rustic or flowery. That may be your taste, but prospective buyers usually look for neutral schemes.Floral or chintz designs won’t appeal to everyone.

Colours shouldn’t be too extreme. You may like black or red bathrooms, but others may not, and you need to keep prospective buyers in mind.Whether or not you want to sell, remember that bright colours can becaome tiresome after a while.

If you keep your worst impulses in check, you’ll choose bathroom tiles that enhance an elegant room, and will last for some time to come.
